Description
The Carinthian section of the Drau valley begins at Oberdrauburg, to the north of which lies Zwickenburg, with a Gothic church containing frescos (exterior south wall) depicting the legend of St Leonard. The Late Gothic church at Gerlamoos also possesses fine frescos (including scenes from the legend of St George). Then follow Spittal an der Drau, Fresach and Villach; from Villach the Drau is navigable. The river then flows through several artificial lakes into the Völkermarkter Stausee. The power stations here provide a considerable proportion of the total Austrian power supply. In the former Yugoslavia the Drau, now the Drava, enters the Danube below Osijek.
