Cananéia is surrounded by islands with unspoiled beaches, waterfalls and sambaquis (shell mounds left by prehistoric peoples). To the east is the Ilha Comprida, a natural breakwater closing Cananéia Bay which extends north-east to beyond Iguape. To the south are the islands of Bom Abrigo, Camboriú, Cardoso and Castilho.
The islands of Bon Abrigo (with lighthouse) and Camboriú are 2 hours from Cananéia by boat. The trip to the Ilha do Castilho, a paradise for bird-watchers, takes twice as long.
