Alto Ribeira State Park

The Caverna de Santana lies within the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (established 1958), which extends between Iporanga and Apiaí. Four-fifths of its total area of 35,000 hectares/87,500 acres is occupied by mata atlântica, with more than 10,000 plant and animal species, including the mono-carvoeiro (Köhler's monkey), the largest monkey on the American continent, now an endangered species. Within the area of the park are 205 of the 281 caves officially recorded in São Paulo state. Also worth seeing is the Casa da Pedra ("Stone House"), which has the highest entrance of any cave in the world (176m/577ft).

To reach the park, take BR 116 as far as Jacupiranga, then SP 193 to Eldorado and from there the Eldorado-Iporanga-Serra-Apiaí road.
