From Winnipeg the Whiteshell Route passes through the Mennonite village of Steinbach, then on to Whiteshall Provincial Park, Falcon Lake, Winnipeg River and Pinawa.
Leaving Winnipeg on the TransCanada Highway the route enters the region of the Canadian Shield, its hills, lakes, valleys, forests and rivers abounding with opportunities for hunting and fishing or just relaxing. The resorts of Falcon Lake and West Hawk Lake further east offer fine beaches, sailing and waterskiing. Most of the route winds through the Whiteshell Provincial Park, along the Winnipeg River, criss-crossed by trails through forests that are home to moose, deer and black bear. Anglers can fish for pike and perch in the deep lakes but inside the park there are also shallow, marshy lakes, left by the Ice Age, and the haunt of wildfowl. Rocky crags to the north are covered with spruce and evergreens.
