Sydney is the largest town on Cape Breton Island. Sydney harbor was used from the 16th C initially by European fishermen and then frequently by English and Scottish fleets. Between 1830 and 1870 the town enjoyed an enormous boost through the iron working industry, and iron ore from Newfoundland is still processed here today.
