15 km (9 mi.) to the south is the beginning of the new "Kootenay Skyway" across the southern part of the Selkirk Mountains, which winds its way up over a distance of 23 km (14 mi.) to Kootenay Pass, 1774 m (5822 ft) above sea-level. All along this stretch of 70 km (43 mi.) in total the traveler will keep coming across tower-like huts from which, when there is a threat of avalanches in winter, action can be taken in good time to avoid them.
The town of Salmo describes itself as being the "Hub of the Kootenays". Whether this is true or not, the area does offer a wide range of outdoor activities for both winter and summer. Consequently Salmo can serve as a good base for exploration.
