Highway 6 turn-off to the south leads to the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park and to the U.S. frontier. The township of Pincher Creek (pop. 4000) lies a few miles to the south in the midst of the gently undulating foothills. It is the gateway to the Rocky Mountains and the already mentioned National Park 48 km (30 mi.) further south
Summer activities around Pincher Creek include trail riding, walking in the charming countryside, water-sports and fishing. In winter Westcastle Park, 47 km (29 mi.) south-west of Pincher Creek on Highway 507/744, is a popular ski resort, with slopes measuring 520 m (1700 ft) and three ski-tows.
In 1875 the North West Mounted Police built a stud-farm in the wide grasslands on the eastern edge of the Rockies for the troops stationed in Fort MacLeod. At the end of the 18th c. the first cattle-breeders and settlers followed their example.
