Peace River

The Peace River, which gets its name from "Peace Point" on its lower reaches, rises in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. Its two main tributaries are the Smoky River and the Heart River. On leaving the Rockies, it flows east through the Peace River Valley, and then turns northwards. After 1920 km (1193 mi.), just north of Lake Athabasca, it joins the Athabasca River to form the Slave River, the largest of the rivers flowing into Great Slave Lake.

The middle section of the Peace River Valley, in the eastern Rockies, with places such as Grand Prairie, Peace River and High Prairie - an area of 65,000 sq. km (25,090 sq. mi.) - is famous as fertile farmland with higher-than-average yields of grain and vegetables (potatoes, wheat, rye, etc.). Its good climate and topography meant that the valley was settled very early on, developing into an important farming region and center for the fur trade, particularly with the coming of the railroad in 1915.
