Heading from Revelstoke towards Nakusp (altitude: 415 m / 1360 ft) Highway 23 South skirts Upper Arrow Lake through a densely forested, sparsely inhabited area.
Nakusp, which in recent years has acquired a reputation as a base for winter sports, is known throughout the country as a spa. The thermal baths and other amenities at Nakusp Hot Springs (3 km / 2 mi) have recently undergone modernization and expansion and today attract visitors from around the globe.
Highway 23 South links up with Highway 6 at Nakusp, leading in one direction to Okanagan and in the other to Kootenay Lake and then on to Crowsnest Highway 3, the main east-west route in the south.
Part of the journey from Revelstoke to Nakusp involves taking a car and passenger ferry which takes visitors across Arrow Lake. During the winter months the ferry sometimes pushes ice to get across the lake. On popular summer weekends you may need to wait to get on the ferry.
