Château
Montebello's Château, near the Château de Montebello Hotel, was built in 1850 by Louis Joseph Papineau. A liberal deputy to Lower Canada's legislative assembly, and subsequently leader of the rebel "Patriots" in 1837, he returned to Canada in 1845 from exile in the USA and Paris, where he had become friends with the Count of Montebello. The château was also the childhood home of Henri Bourassa (1868-1952), the liberal politician and founder of the newspaper "Le Devoir", and it was his father Napoléon Bourassa (1827-1916), an architect, artist, sculptor and writer, who was responsible for building Montebello church.
