East of Toronto, the northern shore of Lake Ontario is home to a series of small towns, many of which boast Victorian architecture.
Trent-Severn Canal (Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site of Canada)
The Trent-Severn Canal is a whole system of waterways linking Lake Ontario with Georgian Bay on Lake Huron, wending its way through various river and lake systems, such as the Trent River and Lake Simcoe, in the east of Ontario Province.The changing levels mean that it needs over 40 locks, including the world's highest hoist, built in 1905 at Peterborough, to operate a travelator covering a height of 20 m (66 ft).In the past the Canal was mainly used for carrying grain and timber, and there were lots of mills along its banks, but these have nowadays been replaced by power stations.Today the Trent-Severn Waterway is a part of Parks Canada and officially called the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site of Canada. Lindsay is a city about 80 km /50 mi from Orillia via Highway 7, set in farmland with two big mills. It is a good place for fishing in the well-stocked local waters.Lindsay is also a good base for trips to Kawartha Lakes, in their lovely setting, and the Haliburton Hills.Lindsay has all the regular amenities visitors would expect to find in a small size city, with strip malls, large box retailers, coffee shops, restaurants, and accommodation.
United Empire Loyalist Heritage Centre and Park, Adolphustown, Canada
Loyalist Cultural Centre in Adolphustown isThe United Empire Loyalist Heritage Centre and Park includes a large park area and a small museum housing a variety of objects from Loyalists who came to Canada during the American Revolution. The 1870s brick house displays tools, documents, uniforms and other memorabilia. In the park are walking trails, green spaces, and camping areas.
Haldimand Hills Spa Village, Grafton, Canada
Haldimand Hills Spa Village was previously Ste Anne's Country Inn and Spa, but as the company expanded they decided to change the name. Ste Anne's still exists as it was the name of the original stone building on the grounds.The spa offers a wide variety of treatments and packages to pamper visitors.
Port Hope, Canada
Port Hope began with the arrival of two United Empire Loyalists in the late 18th C. By 1860, the enlarged harbor and two railroads servicing the area made it important in the lumbering and agricultural products trade.Over 200 heritage properties are located within the town, with much of the original architecture remaining.
Capitol Arts Centre (Capitol Theatre)
The Capitol Theatre in Port Hope is one of only two remaining operation "Atmospheric" theatres in Canada. This unique design is meant to create the illusion that visitors are in a specific setting which could include, outdoors under the stars or in a garden. Images, such as clouds, are projected onto the ceiling creating the atmosphere for the theatre, meant to enhance the overall experience. This design came about in the 1920s.The Capitol Arts Centre contains two theatres that include both the Capitol Theatre and the A.K. & Bob Sculthorpe Studio Theatre.
Dorothy's House Museum
Located in Garden Hill, Dorothy's House dates to the late 1869s. Now known as Dorothy's House Museum, the home has many unique features along with the Victorian architecture. Furniture has remained from previous owners, some of which was made by local craftsmen. A period barn and drive shed are also on the property.
Canadian Fire Fighter's Museum
The history of firefighting, from the mid 18th Century to the mid 20th Century, is depicted at the Canadian Fire Fighter's Museum in Port Hope. Exhibits include firefighting equipment, breathing machines, photographs and fire extinguishers.
Deer Creek Golf and Country Estates, Ajax, Canada
Deer Creek Golf and Country Estates in Ajax features two courses, one of which, Deer Creek North, is open to the public. Deer Creek North features 27 holes and takes about 4.5 hours to play.
Historical Museum, Ameliasburgh, Canada
The Ameliasburgh Historical Museum exhibits items from 1850 to the present. The museum is made up of a number of buildings including a church, a log cabin, and a blacksmith shop. There is also a restored steam engine on display.
Belleville, Canada
The town of Belleville was first settled in 1784 by United Empire Loyalists. The town sits on the Bay of Quinte and is known for the yacht harbor and excellent fishing.
Glanmore National Historic Site
Glanmore National Historic Site is a 2nd Empire, 1883 mansion, housing Victorian furnishings and European art. It was designated a National Historic Site because of the architectural features including the elaborate mansard roof, decorative dormer windows, ornate frescoed ceilings, sweeping suspended staircase and intricate woodwork.
Sandbanks Provincial Park
Sandbanks Provincial Park is located along Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County. The park is known for the sand dunes and large expanse of beach that attract large numbers of visitors each summer. This is a largely family oriented park, with camping facilities on site.
Cobourg, Canada
Cobourg, situated along Lake Ontario, was founded in 1798 and by 1900 had become a popular summer resort - with more than 2,000 summer residents. Today it continues to be a popular tourist destination and retirement community.
Victoria Hall
Victoria Hall, completed in 1860, is home to administrative offices, a concert hall and an art gallery. The exterior of the three-story building features Corinthian columns a speaker's balcony and carved symbols such as lyres, dolphins and shells.
Victoria Park
Victoria Park, located on the shore of Lake Ontario at Cobourg, is a 10ha / 25ac recreational area with a white sand beach, marina facilities, lawn bowling, softball diamonds, a rose garden and a floral clock.
Greenwood - Pickering Museum Village
The Pickering Museum Village in Greenwood consists of 14 restored buildings that include a town hall, general store, blacksmith shop and church. Special events and educational programs are offered throughout the year.
Bowmanville, Canada
The small town of Bowmanville was at one time a mill town and now is home to a natural harbor, a horticultural center and Mosport Park.
Darlington Nuclear Generating Station
The Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Bowmanville provides approximately 20 percent of Ontario's power. Interactive displays, literature and an orientation videotape are offered at the Information Center.The Waterfront Trail is also open to visitors.
Bowmanville Museum
The Bowmanville Museum features displays of Victorian costume and a doll collection. Located in mid 19th C Italianate styled house, the home also displays period furnishings.
Bowmanville Zoological Park
The Bowmanville Zoo was opened in 1919 making it the oldest zoo in Canada. The zoo covers 45 acres and features a wide variety of animals. Camel and elephant rides are available.
Tyrone Mill
The Tyrone Mill in Bowmanville is one of Canada's oldest water powered mills. The complex includes a saw mill, a cider mill and a flour mill.
Brighton, Canada
Brighton was settled by United Empire Loyalists in the 1700s. It is located on the shores of Lake Ontario and is considered a summer resort town.
Memory Junction Museum
Memory Junction Museum in Brighton features many railway and area artifacts, memorabilia and historic pieces housed in the original Grand Trunk Station. Visitors can view a fully restored 1929 caboose, 1930 box car, 1914 flat bed, 1930 boarding car, 2 CPR 1950's box cars, 2 1930's speeders, a 1906 steam locomotive and a 1898 Velocipede.
Proctor House Museum
Brighton's Proctor House was built in the late 1860s by John E. Proctor, a local merchant. It is an Italianate style house with views over Lake Ontario and the surrounding countryside. Exhibits change regularly and guided tours describe the history of the house. The property has a community theatre, carriage shed, agricultural museum and hiking trails.
Presquile Provincial Park
Presquile Provincial Park is known for its sandy beach and warm, shallow water. Hiking and bicycling trails allow for wildlife and bird viewing. One of Ontario's oldest operating lighthouses is located within the park. There is also a campground.
