9 km (6 mi.) north-west of Chemainus at Ladysmith (population 9,000) the TransCanada Highway crosses the 49th Parallel. In addition to its various species of tree Ladysmith's Canada Crown Zellerbach Forest Arboretum also has a collection of vintage locomotives and steam engines.
