Kokanee Creek Provincial Park

Kokanee Creek Provincial Park by Kootenay Lake covers 260 ha / 642 acres and lies in the delta of Kokanee Creek at the foot of the Slocan Range which forms part of the Selkirk Mountains. There are sandy beaches, a camp-site, a visitors' center and an office providing information on tours in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park and various walks through sparse deciduous forests of alder and cottonwood-poplar and through mixed and coniferous forest higher up. The name Kokanee, which is Indian for "red fish", refers to the Kokanee salmon which spawns in Kokanee Creek and is a species of salmon which lives only in inland waters; during the spawning season in August and September there are guided explanatory tours and informative events.

Archaeologists have found signs of two seasonal Indian storage sites in Kokanee Creek Provincial Park as well as remains of settlements from the pioneering period.

West Kootenay Visitor Center provides information on the history of the region, mining, the Kootenay (Kutenai) Indians as well as about the paddle-steamer with its paddle-wheel at the stern which used to ply on the lake.
