Fernie (pop. 6000; 1009 m (3312 ft)), a small mining township at the foot of Trinity Mountain, lies in the middle of the Rocky Mountains and in recent years has developed into a year-round holiday center. In winter Fernie Alpine Resort is a popular ski resort offering excellent winter sports facilities, especially for families.
In 1908 a
catastrophic fire devastated Fernie. When it was rebuilt many of the typical wooden houses were replaced by sturdier brick and tile buildings, some of which still remain. The Court Building and Leroux Mansion are fine examples of this style of building.
