Eureka Attractions
The Eureka Radio and Weather Station, run by the USA and Canada since 1948, lies at latitude 80°N on the west coast, separated from Axel Heiberg Island only by a narrow strait. Eureka became known for the fossilized forests from the Eocene Period, approximately 35-60 million years ago, which were discovered on Eureka Sound and Hot Weather Creek in the Remus Basin. In the cold, dry Arctic climate tree-stumps, covered in sand, remained almost unchanged and - together with fossils of turtles and lizards - are evidence of a former much warmer climate.
