From North Bay about 370 km (230mi.) north on the Trans-Canada Highway.
This little mining and industrial town situated in the district of the same name in north-eastern Ontario grew up early in the 20th c. as a result of the legendary finds of gold. Its own iron and steel industries combined with its
location at the rail junction of the Ontario Northland Railway linking it to the north and the east-west line of the Canadian Pacific Railway made it an important loading and transportation center for the minerals mined throughout the region.
The town is considered a gateway to the north, James Bay. One point of interest in town is the Polar Bear Habitat which takes in polar bears who have been rescued.
