The present Highway 3, laid down in 1962, deviates from this old road and now climbs up to the 1535 m (5038 ft) high Bonanza Pass. This mountain area marks the beginning of the Kootenay Region with its chain of mountains running north to south and the deeply-slashed valleys and lakes, earning it its familiar name of the "Switzerland of North America".
