From Duncan follow TransCanada Highway 1 north for 16 km (10 mi.) to Chemainus. Here many of the houses are adorned with larger-than-life size murals illustrating the history of the town, painted by well-known artists. A "Festival of Murals" is held every year in July. Restored Victorian buildings have been turned into restaurants and shops. The big waterwheel in the town center is a relic of the first sawmill, constructed here in 1862.
9 km (6 mi.) north-west of Chemainus at the town of Ladysmith the TransCanada Highway crosses the 49th Parallel.
Ladysmith has a beach and park area along the ocean front that is popular in summer. The downtown has a quaint old main street lined with cafés and shops. In the area around Ladysmith are hiking trails and golfing opportunities.
From Chemainus there are boat trips to the scenically delightful Thetis Island near by.
The island has a population of about 350. In the summer visitors can check out the Thetis Island Summer Market to see various local arts and crafts, produce and more.
View over the beautiful scenery of Thetis Lake on Vancouver Island.
