Bas St-Laurent Attractions

"Bas St-Laurent" is the name given to that stretch of gently undulating countryside to the south of the St Lawrence River with a number of impressive agricultural estates. Further south the natural border is formed by the foothills of the Appalachians. A few rocky ridges and sandy plateau protrude into this intensively cultivated region.

Immigrants from Europe settled on the southern shores of the St Lawrence many years ago.

Close to the river - alongside which the main road also winds - fishing villages nudge each other like pearls in a necklace. Cod, mackerel, lobsters and shrimps are here in abundance, and everywhere tourists are tempted to stay and watch fish being smoked in little huts.

Pretty villages and industrious towns with woodworking and textile factories and the like bear witness to the prosperity of this stretch of country.
Bic, Canada

Grand Metis, Canada
The main attraction in Grand Métis is the Reford Gardens / Jardins de Métis, a beautiful botanical garden open during the summer months.

The town is located at the confluence of the Rivière Mitis and the Saint-Laurent.
Reford Gardens / Jardins de Metis / Parc de Metis
(Bas St-Laurent)
The Jardins de Métis extends from Ste-Flavie to Matane, below Lake Matapédia, and is notable for its great variety of vegetation. The climate means that most plants flower two months later than elsewhere, so spring does not start until June.

The Jardins de Métis was the work of Elsie Reford, niece of Canadian railway tycoon Lord George Stephen. She transformed the area, originally used for salmon fishing, into magnificent English-style gardens.

The Stephen mansion and the Reford Apartments are well worth visiting for the glimpses they afford of life here at the turn of the century.
