Where to Stay & What to See in Canada

Home of the Rocky Mountains, the beautiful valleys of Banff and Jasper and the magical Niagara Falls, Canada is a wonderfully multicultural country that is sure to make any visitor feel at home. Canada caters to a diverse range of interests; nature-enthusiasts can hike up the mountain ranges in Edmonton, Cosmopolitan urbanites can enjoy shopping on Bloor Street in Toronto, and those who prefer a romantic getaway in quaint and charming surroundings can enjoy the old-world charm of Montreal. Each of these cities offers a selection of hotels ranging from three-star budget establishments, to more upscale, luxury hotels in Canada.

Toronto, the most popularly visited city in Canada, is home to some notable tourist attractions. These include the CN Tower, once the tallest free-standing structure in the world, and Casa Loma; a magnificent castle and museum in one, tucked away in the heart of the city. Most attractions in Toronto, including the Harborfront, the Royal Ontario Museum, and The St. Lawrence Market are situated in the extended downtown area. Downtown Toronto is a good area in which to stay if sightseeing and exploring the city are your priority. The existence of a reliable public transport system makes it easy to get to and from the downtown area and allows for some flexibility in which area to stay. Several luxury hotels can be found in the downtown core - these include the established, landmark Fairmont Royal York hotel, the Four Seasons Toronto and the Park Hyatt Toronto hotel. Visitors who prefer to stay in more affordable hotels offering reasonable room rates can also choose from a number of hotel options spread across the city.

The most pertinent aspect of Toronto is its multiculturalism. Visitors to the city cannot help but notice the harmony with which different cultures reside together. In fact, Toronto has a number of different ethnic enclaves which are particularly interesting - these include Chinatown on Spadina, Little Italy, Greektown on the Danforth, and Little India. Visitors can savor a taste of the many different cultures in Toronto when they visit these enclaves. Toronto is also a great place to shop. Aside from the designer stores that can be found on Bloor Street in Downtown Toronto, there are a number of shopping malls and outlets spread across the city. The most popular shopping establishments include Yorkdale Mall, Toronto's Eaton Centre and Fairview Mall. If renting a car in Toronto is not an option, a helpful tip is to carry public transport tokens or all day passes which facilitate use of the extensive bus and subway system to get around the city conveniently.

Montreal is quite different from Toronto in many respects. While it still possesses a typically Canadian culture, the city also has a distinctly European feel. Montreal is not only smaller in size and charming in nature, it is also incredibly romantic. Montreal offers numerous accommodation options ranging from budget hotels for those who would rather not splurge on accommodation, to upscale, five-star hotels for those who prefer luxurious establishments. Nowhere in Canada is the allure of old-world Europe, yet with a coating of North American modernity, more striking than in Montreal. Popular tourist attractions and landmark buildings in Old Montreal such as the City Hall and the Palace of Justice enhance the historic ambiance of the city. Old Montreal houses a number of the city's best hotels - these include the Hotel Pierre du Calvet and the Hotel le Saint James. If shopping and clubbing are at the top of your list of things to do, Downtown Montreal is a better place to stay. Here, more internationally renowned hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton Montreal and the Fairmont, Queen Elizabeth hotel can be found. Both hotels are in close proximity to the popular Sherbrooke Street which offers some of the city's best shopping opportunities. Montreal is sure to charm visitors who appreciate culture and old-school heritage.

Vancouver, perhaps the most temperate city in Canada, is also a popular vacation destination - especially due to its moderate winters. Choose from hotels in Vancouver ranging from three-star budget hotels to luxurious, five-star establishments.
