Éremo di Camáldoli

Soon after the foundation of the monastery a number of monks moved up to the solitude of the Campo Amabile, where, surrounded by forest, they established the Éremo di Camáldoli, a hermitage consisting of a group of monks' cells and a church. The area was enclosed by walls in the late 17th century. The Chiesa del Salvatore (Church of the Savior) was founded in 1207 but was given its present Baroque aspect by rebuildings and remodeling carried out in 1658, 1708 and 1714. On the facade are figures of the Savior and of SS Romuald and Benedict.

Éremo di Camáldoli
The interior (aisleless) has carved Baroque choir-screens and 17th century frescoes of scenes in the life of St Romuald. The plain choir- stalls date from the 15th century. On either side of the altar is a marble tabernacle (16th century). Beyond an iron screen are the monks' cells: 20 of them, in five rows, each with its tiny garden. Five of them (including No. 5, the Cella di San Francesco; No. 10, the Cella della Croce; and No. 15, the Cella di San Martino) are traditionally said to have been built by the founder of the Order, St Romuald.
