Trinity County
Location and origin
Weaverville, situated on the CA 299 in North California, is a suitable setting-off point for excursions into the Shasta Trinity National Forest. Named after one of the gold miners who established this town outside Mother Lode County, Weaverville experienced its heyday during the 1850s, when it had more inhabitants than it has now. This was due mainly to the influx of more than 2,000 Chinese who worked in the gold mines. In 1854 a feud, called a Tong War, broke out between the Chinese communities, as a result of which part of the Chinese quarter was burned down and a large number of the people left. Only a few Chinese still live in Weaverville.
