Mendocino County

Location and general

Ukiah, 3mi/5km from the beautiful Lake Mendocino, lies on the U.S. 101 in a fertile valley which the Indians named Yokaya or Ukiah, meaning roughly south or deep valley. It is the distribution center for the region's agricultural produce, mainly pears and grapes. The timber industry is also important. In 1898 the International Geodesic Union was founded in Ukiah. It is one of the world's five surveying institutes (all on latitude 39°8' north).
Cow Mountain Recreation Area
Cow Mountain Recreation Area offers visitors a number of outdoor activities. There are back country trails, fishing and camping.
Lake Mendocino Visitor Center
There are displays of Pomo Indian culture, crafts and decorative arts. The round shape of the Lake Mendocino Visitor Center is modeled on the Pomo ceremonial dance house.
