San Joaquin County

Location and origin

Founded in 1849, Stockton is linked to San Francisco Bay by a canal 78mi/125km long and 30ft/9m deep. Today it is an important distribution center for grain and other agricultural products grown in the fertile lands around the town.

In its early days it was little more than a place which fortune-seekers passed through on their way to the gold-mines in Mother Lode County. However, a lot of them returned disappointed and decided to remain in Stockton. It was named after Commodore Robert F. Stockton who had taken possession of California in the name of the United States of America in 1846. Since then the town has developed into one of the two largest inland ports in California (the other being Sacramento). Since the Second World War, in particular, Stockton has experienced a rapid increase in population.
