Some 37mi/60km north of San Francisco lies St Helena, one of the important towns in the Napa Valley. Not far away the 4,300ft/1,300m-high Mount St Helena looks down over the Napa Valley. It forms part of the Mayacamas Mountains (named after the old Indian village of Miyakmah, near Calistoga).
The Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park is located one and a half miles south of Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Visitors can watch flour being made in the Old Bale Mill which was built in 1846. The mill features a 36 foot waterwheel.

About 12mi/20km east of St Helena, you will find the artificial Lake Beryessa, formed as a result of the building of the Monticello Dam; its banks are 165mi/265km in length, and there are numerous opportunities for water sports.
The Silverado Museum in St Helena (1490 Library Lane), named after a former Mount St Helena silver mine, is dedicated to the writer Robert Louis Stevenson; as well as first editions of his works it has numerous manuscripts, photographs and letters.
