Santa Clara County

Location and importance

Santa Clara, founded in 1852 and the seat of California's oldest university, lies within the urban complex which stretches along both sides of the U.S. 101 south-east of San Francisco. Today this complex is also known as Silicon Valley because of the large number of industries, both large and small, to be found there. Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and San JoseG all run into each other without any apparent boundaries. Santa Clara is the very hub of Silicon Valley. It is also known far and wide for its fruit cultivation, started by the priests at the Santa Clara Mission. Today mainly dried fruits, especially apricots and plums, are exported.

The population of Santa Clara has grown so fast within the last few years and other development has been postponed, so that you will look in vain for a town center. As a result there are few places of interest to visit.
