Portola was settled and established due its close proximity to the headwaters of the middle fork of Feather River. The logging industry was the main source of employment with its large stands of pine and fir trees.
James Beckwourth was an African American trader, trapper, explorer and 49er. He built this cabin in the 1850's as a trading post and hotel using "V" notched logs. he recorded his life story and adventures.

The Portola Railroad Museum has an extensive collection of over 35 locomotives and 80 other rolling stock. Visitors can climb on the equipment and drive a diesel locomotive.

Portola Visitors Center is located within Williams House, an old log cabin that houses exhibits about the Williams family, historical pictures and other items relating to lumber, railroad and mining in Portola. The home was recognized in the California Historical Landmark Registry.
