This area is home to giant redwoods, some of which are 2,200 years old and can reach 73 m in height.
Mount Tamalpais State Park
At 2,700ft/820m Mount Tamalpais is the highest point in the immediate vicinity of San Francisco. From the top there is a magnificent view of the Golden Gate. The summit can be reached by car (via Golden Gate Bridge and U.S. 101); the alternative is to park at the bottom and walk up one of the many footpaths.

The area around Mount Tamalpais is now nearly all Californian State Park territory, with large picnic areas and two camp sites. As in Muir Woods a few miles further on, there are many redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) in evidence here.
