Location and urban features
Ferndale was founded by Danish farmers in the year 1860. It lies about 15mi/24km southwest of Eureka, and can be reached from there on the U.S. 101 (5mi/8km the other side of the Fernbridge intersection). Worth seeing are the numerous old houses built in the Victorian style - Queen Anne, Eastlake and Gothic Revival styles - with an unusual number of art galleries and craft shops. In addition to the three parish churches the main places worth seeing are Shaw House (703 Main Street), today a small boarding house, and Berding House (455 Ocean Avenue), both built in about 1854. More captivating than any of the individual highlights, however, is the overall impression made by this magical little town.
