Davis, a suburb of Sacramento situated on the U.S. 80 going towards San Francisco, bears the name of its founder Jerome C. Davis who planted wheat, barley, vines and fruit trees on a 400 acre/162 hectare holding here. Today this now urbanized town still lies in the middle of a rich agricultural area.
Richard L Nelson was the first Chairperson of the Department of Art at UCDavis. The RL Nelson Gallery features a Fine Arts Collection of over 4,000 works of art in various materials and media.
