Solano County
Location and origin
Benicia lies on the north coast side of the road from Carquinez which connects San Pablo Bay with Suisun Bay. Founded in the year 1847 - before California became a member of the United States - Benicia is one of the oldest towns in the federation. However, the hopes of its founders to build a large harbor there, have not been fulfilled; nevertheless, Benicia was the capital of the state between 1853/1854. Here, too, the first Protestant church was built (1859), and the first Masonic Lodge in California came into being. Two camel stalls, a beautiful bell-tower and a Dominican cemetery bear witness to the early history of the town. It is also known that Jack London caught oysters in Benicia.
