Caeté - Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso

N.S. do Bom

Sucesso

The church of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso, founded in 1756, was one of the first churches in Minas Gerais to be built of undressed stone. The wood-carving (1758-65) was done under the direction of José Coelho de Noronha, one of the teachers of Antìnio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho. The church stands in Praça João Pinheiro, along with the pelourinho (pillory) at which slaves and criminals were punished, a fountain (Chafariz da Matriz; 1800) and the Public Library, housed in the former Prefecture (1772).
