In the park-like country of the Serra de Caparaó are some of the mightiest peaks in Brazil: the Pico da Bandeira (2890m/9480ft, the third highest peak in the country), the Pico do Cruzeiro (2860m/9385ft), the Pico do Calçado, the Pico do Cristal, etc. There are bridle tracks for most of the way up the Pico da Bandeira; only the last 4.5km/2.8mi must be done on foot.

At 2370m/7775ft is a small mountain hut (terreirão), from which a track runs up to the summit of the Pico da Bandeira. The climb should normally take 10 hours.
