Parque Nacional do Caparaó
The Caparaó National Park (established 1961), with an area of over 16,000 hectares/40,000 acres, lies in the Serra de Caparaó, straddling the border between the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. It can be reached either on ES 185 (see above) or, more conveniently, by continuing on BR 482 until it meets the road to Carangola, from which it is 43km/27mi to Presidente Soares, only 12km/7.5mi from the park entrance in Alto Caparaó. Coming from Vitória, take BR 262 (Vitória-Belo Horizonte) and then, in Minas Gerais, the road which runs through Manhumirim and Presidente Soares (24km/15mi from BR 262). From Rio de Janeiro, take BR 116 (Rio-Bahia) as far as Realeza, and from there BR 262 in the direction of Vitória, which comes in 41km/25mi to the road to Manhumirim.
