Description
Csepel (Csepel-sziget), District XXI of the Hungarian capital, is situated on an island in the Danube and is the headquarters of the Csepel Vas-és Fémmivek (Csepel Iron and Metal Works). This undertaking, which produced goods ranging from steel pipes to bicycles, once employed many thousands of workers; today, however, it finds itself in the middle of a serious financial crisis.
On the west side of Csepel lies the largest Free Port anywhere on the Danube, with an annual turnover of more than 3 million tonnes.
The riverside swimming-bath at Csepel, fed by a thermal spring, is the third largest of its kind in Budapest. It is situated on the Soroksári Duna, a branch of the river on the east side of Csepel Island.
