The Royal Art and History Museum (Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire/Koninklijk Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis) occupying the south wing of the Palais is split into two main sections: Mediterranean culture from early history to antiquity (in the new Kennedy Wing) and Belgian pre- and early history, the history of Christian Europe from the Middle Ages, and Asian and American culture (in the older Nerviens Wing).
Some departments are only open on certain days however: antiquities, Islam, Oriental and Christian art on even dates; sculpture and decorative art on odd dates; early Belgian history on Wednesday only.

Royal Art and History Museum Kennedy Wing
On the ground floor are archaeological finds from Luristan and Jericho, for example. On the first floor: Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultures including a second C. A.D. street and very large fifth C. A.D. mosaic from the town of Apamea in Syria. The second floor holds Egyptian artifacts.

Only the most interesting rooms can be listed. Rooms 1-6: Belgian settlement up to Roman times; Rooms 16-31: art and applied art from the 14th to 17th C., including Paris, Tournai and Brussels tapestries (legend of the Sablon Virgin, Battle of Roncevaux) and, in pride of place, a carved altarpiece of St George by Jan Borman; Room 36: large narthex with eight Brussels Gobelins from cartoons by Bernard van Orley illustrating the story of Jacob; Rooms 45-46: Oriental and Islamic art; Rooms 48-53: European applied art from the 17th to 20th C. including, Room 51, Art Nouveau; Rooms 55-67: Southeast Asia, America and Oceania; Rooms 76-83: 15th to 20th C. European costume and lace; delftware; Room 96: China.
