Brussels - Maison d'Erasme (Erasmushuis)

 
In 1521 the humanist scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam (1469-1536) lodged for five months in the early 16th C. house still standing today in what is now the Rue du Chapitre (Kapiteelstraat) near the Metro station St-Guidon. In addition to Gothic and Renaissance furnishings the rooms of Maison d'Erasme contain a number of items belonging to the great man. Visitors can see his study and his bedroom, in which latter a first edition of "In Praise of Folly" is displayed. On the ground floor are several interesting paintings, including one by Hieronymus Bosch.
