Kasteel van Gaasbeek

Ensconced in a charming park 14km/8.5mi southwest of Brussels (leave by Anderlechtsepoort, thence via Viezenbeek) stands the medieval Kasteel van Gaasbeek. Parts of the château are 13th C. but the main Renaissance-style building dates from the 16th C.

The magnificent interior contains superb furniture, carpets, glass, porcelain, paintings, gold and silverware and armor.

Must-see attractions nearby:
Most remarkable of all however are the priceless 15th-17th C. Brussels and Tournai tapestries. Rubens' will can also be seen, on display in the archive room.

The terrace has a lovely view of the gently undulating countryside which Bruegel so often captured in his paintings and which today remains a delightful place to walk.
A 17th C. fountain with box hedging and a topiary are to be found in the courtyard of the castle.
