Kasteel van Gaasbeek Description
Ensconced in a charming park 14km/8.5mi southwest of Brussels (leave by Anderlechtsepoort, thence via Viezenbeek) stands the medieval Kasteel van Gaasbeek. Parts of the château are 13th C. but the main Renaissance-style building dates from the 16th C.

The magnificent interior contains superb furniture, carpets, glass, porcelain, paintings, gold and silverware and armor. Most remarkable of all however are the priceless 15th-17th C. Brussels and Tournai tapestries. Rubens' will can also be seen, on display in the archive room.

The terrace has a lovely view of the gently undulating countryside which Bruegel so often captured in his paintings and which today remains a delightful place to walk.
