Salt Island Description
Shaped like the letter "T", Salt Island measures just 1mi/1.61km in all directions. A short boat ride west from Cooper Island, Salt island is somewhat desolate with only about six West Indians populating the island, living in a strand of small cottages on the north shore. Near the north shore beach is a salt pond, and the salt-making for which the island is named is still undertaken by residents. Salt Island's main attraction is the wreck of the RMS Rhone that crashed on the island's southwest coast. West of the settlement, a stone wall surrounds the 124 graves of those who perished in the wreck.
