Mörel
7km/4mi up the Rhône valley from Brig is Mörel (800 m/2,625ft; pop. 600), formerly a post station and now a base for walks and climbs on the Riederalp. There are two cableways, one running up in two stages via Ried (length 3,055 m/10,123ft, height difference 1,155 m/3,790ft, time 25minutes) to the Riederalp, the other to the Greicheralp (length 2,798 m/9,180ft, height difference 1,141 m/3,744ft, time 15minutes) with a continuation to the Moosfluh (length 1,817 m/5,962ft, height difference 451 m/1,480ft, time 12minutes), directly above the Aletsch glacier. From the Riederalp there is a chair-lift (length 1,053 m/3,455ft, height difference 299 m/981ft, time seven minutes) to the Hohfluh, from which there is a splendid walk down to the Riederfurka (2,064 m/6,772ft). A well-constructed road leads from the mountain station of the cableway Rieder-Alp-Moosfluh, along the Bettmerhorn to Lake Märjelen, and offers spectacular views of the Aletsch glacier and the surrounding peaks over 4,000 m/13,000ft.
