50km/30mi northeast of Bredasdorp on the Wydgeleë road is the De Hoop Nature Reserve (area 40,000ha/100,000ac) which was established in 1956.
The reserve takes in a picturesque stretch of coast and its beautiful hinterland. It is an area of fynbos, the characteristic Cape vegetation, with 1,400 species of plants, including 25 extremely rare and endangered species, 63 species of mammals (50 of them on land and 13 in the sea) and 40 species of reptiles. Between June and September right whales, who come here to mate, can be observed close to the coast.
There is a camping site within the reserve as well as cottages to let.
