São Tomé das Letras
São Tomé das Letras (pop. 10,000) lies at an altitude of almost 1300m/4265ft in the Serra da Mantiqueira, 54km/34mi north of Caxambu. Many of its inhabitants are adherents of various "alternative" movements, making the little town one of the mystical cult centers of South America. In the center of the town, near the 18th century church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, are a number of houses hewn from the quartz rock.
In the surrounding area there are numerous caves, such as the Gruta de Feijão and the Grutas do Carimbado, and a number of waterfalls, among them the Cachoeiras da Eubiose (4km/2.5mi outside the town) and the Véu da Noiva (12km/7.5mi).
