Santana de Parnaíba

A few kilometers south-east of Pirapora is Santana de Parnaíba, an important religious center with historic old buildings. On Praça da Matriz are the church of Nossa Senhora de Sant'Ana (c. 1580) and the house of the bandeirante Bartolomeu Bueno (1600), which in the 18th century was the Câmara Municipal (Town Hall) and is now occupied by the Museu Pedagógico Anhanguera. Among popular festivals celebrated in the town are the Bloco dos Fantasmas, a parade of spirits on the Saturday of Carnival; the Samba de Cururuquara (May); the Festas Juninas (June Festival); the Festa de Santana (end of July); and Festa da Elevação da Cidade (commemorating the town's municipal charter) on November 14th, with repentistas (impromptu poets) and parades of men in bandeirante costume.
