History

Penedo originated in the 16th century as a fortified settlement (arrayal) on the banks of the Rio São Francisco. Its foundation is attributed to Duarte Coelho, first holder of the capitania of Pernambuco (which also included the territory of Alagoas). Its main sources of income were the growing of sugar-cane and cattle-rearing. The rearing of cattle developed on a large scale on the banks of the river, however, only after the fall of the large quilombo of Palmares, which for almost a century had dominated the interior of Alagoas between the Rio São Francisco and Pernambuco.
