Nova Friburgo Attractions

Nova Friburgo

Nova Friburgo, a hill town in the center of Rio de Janeiro state, lies 150km/95mi north-east of Rio de Janeiro itself. It was the first non-Portuguese colony on Brazilian soil, following a decree issued by Dom João VI in 1818 authorizing immigrants from the Swiss canton of Fribourg to establish a settlement on this site in the Serra. The first thirty families arrived in 1819, and the settlement was given the status of a vila in the following year.
