Macaé
RJ 106 and BR 101, coming from Rio de Janeiro, lead to the port town of Macaé (pop. 100,000), which preserves a number of 18th and 19th century buildings. There are beautiful beaches and lagoons in the surrounding area. In recent years Macaé has increased in importance as a port for the shipping of oil from the Campos field.

The most popular beaches - Cavaleiros, Campista and Pecado - lie to the south of the town, between Macaé and Rio das Ostras. On this stretch of coast there is also the lagoon of Imboacica, which attracts many water sports enthusiasts. To the north of Macaé are the beaches of Barra and Carapebus, on the lagoon of the same name. Near the center of the town are the Praia de Imbetiba (18th century lighthouse) and the Praia do Forte, dominated by the fort of Santo Antonio do Morro Feio (1613).
