Lumiar Attractions

30km/19mi east of Nova Friburgo is Lumiar, which developed in the 1980s into a settlement of "alternative" communities which built pyramid-shaped houses and ashrams (hermitages for members of Indian sects). Lying at a height of 600m/2000ft, Lumiar has been able to preserve much of its natural vegetation, which is watered by dozens of rivers and streams. Hill walkers and climbers will find plenty of tracks and footpaths, frequently interrupted by gullies and waterfalls.
