Lagoa Santa

The town of Lagoa Santa, famed for its prehistoric sites, lies 41km/25mi north of Belo Horizonte and 70km/43mi south-east of Sete Lagoas. The cave paintings and other traces of prehistoric man ("Lagoa Santa Man") have been known and studied since the 19th century - more precisely since the pioneering work of the Danish geologist Peter Lund, who died in 1880 and is buried in the town.

Gruta da Lapinha - Lapinha Cave Archeological Museum

13km/8mi north of Lagoa Santa on the road to Conceição do Mato Dentro is the Gruta da Lapinha, 511m/559yds long and 40m/130ft deep. In front of the cave are stalls selling a variety of wares and a children's playground. The Archaeological and Mineralogical Museum beside the cave displays prehistoric utensils and burial urns, embalmed animals and human remains.
House of Fernão Dias
18km/11mi from Lagoa Santa on the road to the Lapinha Cave is the 17th century estate of Sumidouro, with a house which belonged to Fernão Sias and the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário. Fernão Dias Pais, a well known bandeirante from São Paulo, explored the interior of Minas Gerais between 1674 and 1681 and thus initiated the "gold cycle" of Brazil.
