Iguape

Iguape, founded in 1538 on the Ilha do Papagaio, lies 209km/130mi south-west of São Paulo and 82km/51mi north-east of Cananéia. The best way to reach the town is on BR 116 (São Paulo-Curitiba) to Biguá (147km/91mi), then 62km/39mi on SP 222.

History

Until the middle of the 16th century Iguape was a flourishing gold-diggers' settlement. The gold from round the Rio Ribeira do Iguape was cast into ingots in local foundries. The town's colonial buildings are protected as national monuments.

The basilica of Bom Jesus (1772) contains two wooden statues, the Bom Jesus do Iguape (1647) and the 18th century Bom Jesus da Cana Verde, which was washed ashore after a shipwreck.

The Festival of Bom Jesus do Iguape, celebrated between July 28th and August 7th, is a high point of popular religiosity. One of the principal events is the ritual of washing the statue of Bom Jesus in the Gruta (Cave) do Bom Jesus.

Adjoining the church, on Largo da Basílica, is Brazil's first gold foundry, which dates from 1635. It now houses the Museu Histórico (weapons, coins, documents, arts and crafts, archeological finds).

12km/7.5mi north-east of Iguape is Barra da Ribeira, a fishing village founded during the colonial period by Spanish settlers. An old tradition still practised here is the Rodizo de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, during which an image of the Virgin is carried to a fisherman's house (a different one each year).
