Guarapari

54km/34mi south of Vitória is Guarapari, the largest bathing resort in Espírito Santo, famed for the monazite sand (containing thorium dioxide) of its beaches, which is used in the treatment of arthritis and other conditions. The town grew up round a small chapel dedicated to St Anne and a Jesuit mission founded in 1585 by Padre Anchieta.
